Uniquely sad song and a strange intro for A Ghost is Born. Composition of the song doesn’t lend itself to an album opener, being a couple minutes of startlingly tragic lyrics followed by around three and a half minutes of harsh (for Wilco, anyway) instrumentation, but it works for an album that feels like a mixture of the daze of a hangover and the rationality of fresh sobriety. What I’m saying is A Ghost Is Born is one of those midnight records, something you put on to wind down your night and ease yourself into morning. Good record, good song (though not my favorite) but something odd and kinda heartbreaking about this one.
